Since 2004 until November 2023 I have had the privilege of using my of civil engineering, construction, and architecture experience to produce practical design solutions for homes, churches, and businesses. It is now my distinct privilege to serve as the Construction and Design Project Manager at the City of Roseville!
I had a wide range of architectural experience in assembly, food service, classroom, office, retail, and clinic uses to form optimal worship spaces.
I provided architectural design services from site selection, conceptual planning, construction document, and construction administration.
Call or text if you have a building need you would like to address, I would be happy to direct you to fellow professionals that can help you.
I still like to encourage good sense and practice in construction. I would love to continue to encourage you in your project if only by a few words.
My primary background is in Christian church design. While we were not an exclusively church design company, the majority of the clients we served had assembly use design needs. The scope of our projects ranged from 120 to 1,000 seat auditoriums and accompanying lobby, fellowship, kitchen, cafe, education, childcare, and office areas. Our typical projects ranged in size from 3,000 to 25,000 square feet with our largest project being 42,000 square feet. It included both church and private school facilities, required parking/site design, involved an entitlement process, construction documents, and construction administration. We work to enable the church's worship and enjoyment of Jesus Christ in a building suited for this purpose.
Our experience in retail extended from small Tenant Improvements within existing cold/warm shell spaces to new buildings up to 10,000 square feet for individuals and corporate clients. We also had background in adapting franchise prototypes to local jurisdictional requirements.
A broader area of our design practice is to help professionals and business owners with their office design needs. Our office design experience ranged from 500 to 10,000 square feet. With each client we endeavored to work out a design suited to their business workflow.
There is more to a successful restaurant and coffee shop than walls, booths, tables, and chairs: environment and service is a delicate balance that defines the "atmosphere" of any food service establishment. We helped our clients work out the environment part so that they could think about how to best serve great food and coffee. We worked with interior designers, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, structural engineers, and equipment suppliers to bring the project completion.
And while not everyone in our office enjoyed coffee - we loved designing great spaces to enjoy great coffee.
We had experience in designing clinic spaces, physician offices, dental offices, and laboratories. Our experience includes 1,000 to 13,000 square foot medical offices for private and national organizations.
We do not design hospital facilities.
Part of our experience included industrial storage facilities with heavy involvement of fire consulting and mechanical engineers. We used our knowledge of the fire code requirements for designing industrial uses and hazardous material storage and handling facilities.
A portion of our work involved creating plans that meet accessibility needs in existing facilities. We used universal design principles to produce code compliant accessible buildings for the broadest spectrum of users to help building owners with immediate and long term accessibility concerns.

Obedience is not a favorite word of mine. It is restrictive. Seems subjugative and can even seem oppressive. How many words can I invent to say the same thing? Many! But we live in a structure of laws, we are born into laws, grow up into them, work within them, live by them, and can even die by them.
We obey laws "not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience" (Romans 13:5). As it pertains to construction, there are also laws, codes, regulations, standards, etc. And there is a cost associated with permits, plans, and inspections.
There is an even greater cost associated with not complying with building regulations. Not only in terms of paying for violation fees, but to our character, our souls, and even our minds. No distress is greater than that which comes from within. "The wicked flee though no one pursues, but the righteous are as bold as a lion" (Proverbs 28:1).
A burdened conscience can keep you up at night - make you "run" when no one suspects anything. A paranoid-like fleeing from questions and conversations can lead one to a destructively reclusive life. Worse yet, a burned out conscience, boldly plunges the person and their associates into breaking more and more laws with greater and greater consequences.
On the other hand, when a person is obedient to the laws to which they agree to live under they have an internal confidence which is able to withstand the accusations and attacks that they may face. While some may unknowingly find themselves outside of what the building codes requires, we do believe that we should strive to correct the situation with all the energy that God gives us.
We can help.
We would all like to live in a perfect world where nothing breaks and every aspect of a building is just right. Instead, the second law of thermodynamics seems to dominate our buildings - they decay and break down. There are also effects of bad workmanship, ad-hoc solutions to expansions, and spur-of-the-moment "temporary" repairs that become permanent parts of the building and site.
We spend much time, money, and energy in order to build and re-build the buildings that provide us a place to live, work, and worship. At Baranov Building Design we would like to be part of your team by providing practical and affordable solutions to realize your building vision.
The building department is not out to get you. It may be frustrating at times, but it is not without it's beneficial purpose. The people there are entrusted with the duty to protect citizens from negligent construction effects, abuse within the construction industry, shoddy work, bad design, etc. This is their job - we do our job to design buildings that satisfy the parameters of our client's program subject to the authority having jurisdiction's (AHJ) approval.
